Parrot Playstands
sw loves agro:
I have a old cockatoo who has never had her flight feathers cut, she is 20 years old and has never flown. I would like to know the likelyhood she will learn to fly because she has shown no interest (which I'm glad of) and I'd like to know which feathers to cut if I do cut her feathers for safety, just in case. I've never cut a cockatoos feather, although I have cut chickens... but I'm sure that's different.

I'm a new parrot owner and I have noticed that my parrots beak is flaking? There is a piece that is about a quarter of an inch long at the top of his beak that is driving him batty. He rubs his beak on his cage and play stand. Is this normal? Do thier beaks shed? Is thier anything (oil) I can put on it to help him?

Hi there:
I've been trying to think of household items I use and ultimately throw out, that could possibly be "recycled" in a parrot cage. For example, wrapping treats in corn husks and stuffing them in the cardboard tube from a roll of paper towels as a foraging toy. Tying them with old shoe laces might be too gross, but I'm open to other ideas!
I think I saw on YouTube a parrot that had been given the yellow pages as a shred toy.
Can / would parrots eat banana peels? Do you guys have any...

So I was sitting on the couch watching TV, and Eve was on the play stand. In walks my roommate and sits down with a popsicle. Everything is normal and quiet. Before I knew it... Eve flies over to me....hops across my lap to the other side of the couch on to my roommates lap, up her chest and snatches the popsicle stick OUT OF HER MOUTH and flies off back to the stand to chew on his prize! All in the matter of seconds!
Of course this is my fault...I introduced him to a few nibbles of a fruit bar...

Hi There I'm so excited!
Vinnie has a window perch. He will randomly leap from whenever he wants to, and has done so at least a dozen times.
With his wings clipped he can still land on my bed. But when I called to him to "come here" this morning, well it took about 15 minutes for him to build up the confidence. He landed safely and immediately went from calm and quiet perched parrot to very excited play (again, foot toys handy and I'm on another 3 day streak of no bites!). I think he was as...

I have this part down:
Always fresh water and pellets in the bowl.
Seeds as a treat, once or twice a week.
Nuts are given as a reward during training/playing with toys.
I'm seeing varying opinions on how many times a day people feed their bird. When do you give mixes/mashes and birdie bread? Is that instead of meals you eat, or in addition to? What does your birds feeding schedule look like?
I always just fed Paulie whatever we were eating, and now I'm seeing all these recipes for Birdie...

I have been searching stores and internet for playstands. And to be honest the price is to high for me. We make pongo his own toys. Cheaper that way especialy the way he goes through them. But I want to make a play stand with some perches on it. And I will have to go to a store to purchase either the pvc or the wood. I did call one of our local wood dealers and they said they have oak that is not treated. Is there any advice on what kind of woods I should stay with. I need to do perches which I would...

I have a two year old male greencheek. I just bought a female pineapple conure. How do I get them to love one another. They only had one day together. They were okay. Any suggestions !! I know it will take sometime. If anyone has had this experience, I would like some advice THANKS

Here are a few pics of Pongo's new playstand. Still work in progress we are going to finish the sides. And add a few more perches to it. And add a ladder. He was scared of it at first. But we put treats on it for him so that he knew it was safe.. Here are the pics..

I'm looking for some ideas on forming a stronger bond with Anka, my vasa. She has fledged and has a very minor clip, so she doesn't need me for anything. She's not untrusting, and enjoys being around me, but we rarely physically interact.
Basically, our relationship is this:
Occasionally, usually if she's sleepy, she'll want a head & back rub. She also lets me touch her wings (touch, not pet repeatedly). She steps up ~75% of the times I ask, but typically doesn't stay on my hand too long. She...

I dont yet have a parrot(see newbie with a cage post) but i do have a cage for one and have sat it in our lounge in readiness for a parrot.
What i want to know is should the cage be in the room which is used most by us, which means it will be moving to the dining room as we have a tv there and a sofa so end up in there mostly, especially winter time.
Also both spots which i would currently consider to be a good place for a cage (in lounge and dining room) have a heater vent next to them, now i imagine...

Hi everyone. I am looking for advice with my TAG who seems to be very territorial oh his cage. He doesn't really like to be touched while on/in his cage nor does he step up while on/in his cage. Once he is off his cage he is wonderful, steps right up and enjoys being petted. However, the only way we can get him off his cage is by forcing him to fly off or scaring which makes feel really bad. The vet told me this is a normal behavior but I am looking for advice to break him of this and a better way to get...

I want to build a pvc play stand for my Eclectus, and I know I need to wrap the pvc with something so that he can grip onto it. I read that you can use vet wrap. I actually have a LOT of dynacast human cast tape that I was hoping I could use instead. I know that when birds break their legs they put casts on them, and I would assume that the bird would chew on the cast. So I am just curious if anyone knows whether or not a human cast tape would be a safe material to wrap his play gym with. Thank you!!
