As far as I can tell the most harmful part of PVC in the process of making it. And as long as it is aired out, which it would already be you should be fine. If it was so toxic leaching out chemicals it would not be used for plumbing. Or would be regulated so that it could only be used as the out take for plumbing, and the intake so you wouldn't drink the water from it. I know PVC has been used for years for birds and for bird toys with out ill effect. Maybe Chiquin can shed some light on the subject? He seems to be the environmental chemical wizard,
I started out with the wood stand, but thought it would be a pain, not to mention very expensive, to construct more peices onto it than I already had. Plus this cleans really easley! I also wanted to be able to hang the toys, I got sick of them being pooped on every ten minutes. Now that they are suspended somewhat Eve is playing with them non stop as opposed to using them as the potty. Now if a had a tree that I could take branches from that I knew wasn't sprayed or anything.........
I think using PVC is a great way to get creative and make it so that it fits a birds personality. Plus it's very cost effective so instead of spending $300.00 on one store bought play gym a person could spend the same $300.00 and get 2-5 home made play gyms.
I have also seen people use colorful vet wrap so that the PVC is easier to grip. I use it in my aviary because that was the only way my birds would use the PVC perches and their hanging play thingy (lack of better word. LOL) that has rings and what not on it for them to play with.
If you used the cement, I hope you let it dry for a good, long time
Also, I was in the shower and thought that wrapping the PVC in some good twine! Maybe even two layers. The bird could spend forever unravelling and shredding! Maybe hang some foraging toys on there...
Ooo so cool and fun Kimba! I make all of Alex's toys and made the perch that hangs from our ciling above his cage. I had already started to think about a couple of gyms so that he can be with us in different parts of the house. I wasn't sure about the pvc pipe because it is so slick but as was pointed out I can always cover it in differnt types of rope. I would say it's time for another trip to Home Depot
It's just a personal thing with me is all. I hate white so would rather spend the extra time of covering the pipe. But yes I can see how just sanding it would be plenty good. I really do need to get some pictures up.
