Default Hello Vasa People!

It seems this is the forum where Vasa people have congregated

I've been reading about these fascinating birds for quite a while now, and would like to get in on some conversation with current owners.

I plan on only having probably two birds total in my life, so that I can devote plenty of time, energy and money to them. I'd probably have only one, but think it's more fair that they have a buddy to chat with and don't feel like they have to watch out for predators all alone when no one is home.

I really fell in love with everything i read about the macaw personality, but I really want to have a CAG, and macaws can be sensitive to the dust, so I feel I shouldn't take that risk to my companion's health. So it was back to reading about Vasas.

I'm just wondering if anyone can compare their personality to a macaw's. I liked what I read about macaws playing interactive games with their owners, wrestling, cuddling, lying/playing on their backs, and bonding very closely with their caretakers. They just seem like wonderful souls.

I've also read positive things about the intelligence of Vasas, and would love to hear some stories about that.

One last thing (for now at least ) - what sort of cage can keep one of these little buggers IN without them tearing it apart? I'm thinking I'd get something that was about 3'x4', stainless steel. Would the kind with the bars drilled through rather than welded be needed?

It will be quite a while before I can get one, but any suggestions for a breeder would be great. Right now I've got an insanely expensive surgery to pay for that my dog needs in a couple of weeks, but I'm hoping the spring/summer after this coming one I could bring a parrot into my life. I'm mostly looking at Old World Aviaries and would love any info anyone has on them.

Thanks in advance!

Hi! I don't know if you can compare vasa's to macaws????? Vasa's to me are as playful as a caique, smart as a grey, and cuddly s a too. I personally do not see much comparison between vasa's and macaws, but others might. As far as a cage just sty away from anything with screws, as vasa's are very mechanical. For story's....read through some of the posts here, there's a lot here on them.

Thanks Kimba I've really learned a lot from all the vasa posts here. I especially like that you have so much info on their special dietary needs.

I mostly was just wondering if they enjoy interactive type games with their people, and just how intelligent they are. I've read so many great things on every site that mentions them!

The one thing I've read that doesn't sound so great is that it seems they have a very high sex drive? I suppose you have to when you are a male vasa trying to please your woman, or a female with many males pleasing her I've read that they will sometime mate on everything, even outside of breeding season. That doesn't sound so great, but I know breeding behaviors can generally be kept under control with some considerations. Do you think this is a problem with Vasas?

It's the vasa revolution Chiquin, might as well join us cause you can't beat us! Hehe.

Sheduma...THEYHAVE VERY HIGH SEX DRIVES, Eve does try to mate with anything and everything, but like other birds there no aggression behind it. And it's more like play and dancing than down and dirty. Vasa's do an elaborate mating dance, where there heads sways back and forth, there head goes under there wings, and they try to stick their head under your hand and flip upside down. So it is a completely difference experience than with other parrots. and it's rely not a bother at all. It gives them more character.

I guess I'll take you word that it's not big deal. The lack of aggression is certainly nice... but the second one of those hemipenises starts rubbing up against me...

LOL

Yeah...I will not say it's plesant, it's must sound funny to others thou...."Eve, keep your ------ off me!"

Because of their lack of bonding, they can also easily lose trust in you, as well.

Two birds or one bird, they still consume massive amouts of time. Forever.
