Hi Samiam!
Is this the recording you heard?
Vasa Parrot Frequently Asked Questions
That to me sounds like a room full of vasas, not just two. But Vinnie is too young to compare him to those in breeding condition.
Vinnie basically has about 4 different sounds he makes. Three are pleasant and one not so much.
The loudest and most obnoxious is kind of a bark, and the first time you hear it will make you jump out of your skin. He uses it for a few different things: fighting with toys, "that's my toe in the door", and "I'm king of the shower curtain rod". He might do it once a day, but certainly not every day. I guess it's one of those squawks they just have to get out of their system. I live in an apartment and have asked three of my neighbors if they can hear him. Two said no, and one said he heard him once. (My windows have been open most of the summer, and this neighbor has a window right next to mine.)
The second loudest, and it's by no means loud, is what I think is his way of saying Hello. It's a short and sweet little whistle. He'll do this when I walk in the room, or pick him up, and sometimes when I say "Hi!" he will respond with this whistle. It's a kind of half-whistle half-chirp. He even did it to a group of strangers in the park last weekend. So cute.
The other two are not loud at all. In fact I have tried to record them but can't because he clams up when the ambient noise (tv, radio, ac) go off, and you can barely hear him over ambient noise. In both cases he seems he's just entertaining himself. One is "baby talk" he just chatters to himself nice and low (he's not yet 5 months). The other is sing-song whistling, and he can do this for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. I could listen to it all day long. It's just so rich, sweet, and pleasant.
Vinnie's the only bird in this household. It might be different if he had other parrots to play with. I'm sorry I'm not really familiar with the calls of other birds, such as greys, to offer some comparison.
He will spend most of the day quiet as a mouse. He's happy to sit on his playstand and chew at whatever is there. When he wants my attention he flaps. Chirps when I call out to him, and sing to himself most evenings. But chirp and squawk all day long? I don't think he has it in him. But he's a baby male, and adult females could be a different story, I don't really know.
If I had the time and space, I wouldn't hesitate to adopt another Vasa, male or female, baby or adult. But right now I'm spending a lot of one on one time trying to train him (he's just so smart) and I don't think I could do that with two, much less take them both to the park!
Good luck with your decision. Please let us know how it works out!
