Brock we'd be curious to know : Is Anka clipped, and if so can she still fly? When Kimba has clipped Eve's wings, he can still fly. But Vinnie also has a couple tail feathers clipped, and he cannot fly. I think FF did this when I phoned to say I was picking him up.
I joined this forum upon the recommendation of Kim. She has Eve, a totally hysterical male Greater Vasa. Right now I have The Murphster (Murphy) and he has been a total joy from day one. Next week, Tuesday, his brother and sister from this year's clutch, will be joining us.
There is absolutely NOTHING bad that I can say about these guys. He is so wonderful that I am inthe process of acquiring a few more in order to breed them. Even though the vasas are not colorful on the outside as many other parrots, their personality more than makes up for it. Next year I shall purchase a female from a breeder in California. This way the babies may grow up together.
For the woman who was wanting the names of a few breeders, contact me off list. For more Vasa photos, go to AvianWeb - The Bird Lover's Resource and scroll down to Greater Vasas. Eve, Murphy (and his moms and pops), and Maddy, another pet Vasa here in Denver are all displayed.
If anyone has any questions at all about these guys, please feel free to e-mail me.
Oh, BTW, I have 6 amazons, 1 scarlet macaw, 3 pyurrha conures (2 rosiefrons and a painted), and 4 keets. The 2 baby vasas are coming! They are all joined by 6 cats, 2 dogs and 3 horses. So it's a busy but happy household!
Hi There and Welcome! So glad you can join us! Sure does sound like you have a house full. I so agree about their personalities making up for their color, and am sure to have dozens of more questions in the future.
I've been trying to cradle Vinnie like you in your pictures, and am hoping that just because he refuses now, it's just a matter of time. He rolls over on his back on his own when he's playing, but won't let me initiate it. He will be 5 months on the 20th, and has been just so much fun. He's so smart I think I have to start adding two or three new tricks a week.
Hi Cherie! Wow, so many people who live with Vasas here! You guys are all revving me up... I cannot wait to go meet that girl (I have planned to go visit a five year old female this weekend in need of rehoming). I have gotten to the point where I have a hard time sleeping cause I ma just so anxious.
So Cherie, how old is Murphy? Is he a male? What could you say about him. Like I said in another post, I am so grateful to ahve found this message board, learned mroe here in a week then of all those years surfing the net.
Have a great night all!
(ps, for Brock, the Vasa I am going to meet is a supposed to be a hen, she also has a small head and a more "dainty" beak I find compared to Vinny and Eve. But I only saw her in pics so far)
Anka has 3 center flights on each wing clipped and flies VERY VERY well. Her tail wasn't clipped at all. I called and requested not to have her clipped, but was told they must clip them but would do a light one. They all looked lightly clipped when I went to the store, but Anka was the only one who did any flying. The boys just wanted to hang out.
Molly - it must be Vinnie, that is the other wild caught baby in the picture! How exciting!
She is also not banded.
Anka hasn't played on her back yet and seems very disinterested in laying on it, but she loooves back scratches. I'd love to hear you guys' progress with this. I am taking it slow with her. I have to, or else she'll fly somewhere I can't reach her and laugh at me!
Yay!!!!!!! 4 vasa owners and one vasa lover on board! I am so excited over this. The opportunity to share experiences and knowledge about these guys is gonna be great.
mtn826.....you never told me you have a painted conure!!!!!!!! I had one also named crayon, she sadly passed at the age of 9 from accidental ingestion of something, but she was really great.
Vinnie did his first headstand this morning! And somersaults! He was especially playful earlier, and I found that tickling the small space on his back, between the top of his wings, has much the same effect as scratching a cat at the base of its tail. Only Vinnie would put his head down under his belly, and his tail up, and roll right over! He did this again and again, and at one point just stopped mid-way with his tail straight up and he feet out in front of him.
What a little joker. He sure loves getting a laugh
