Default Can't decide Jardine's parrot or cinnamon green cheek conure

Hello all!

This is my first post im happy to have found this site!

I'm in quite the situation here as I am looking to get another bird (I have a year old cockatiel) and can't decide between a Jardine's Parrot or a cinnamon green cheek conure.

The jardine's parrot is much more expensive than the GCC ($500 as opposed to $125).

I really can't decide between these two birds, and I can't get both... Can anyone give me descriptions and similarities & differences between these two great bird species?

A little about me... I'm a 22 year old who has about 1 and a half years of college left... But I am living at home and commuting to college, so the dorms aren't an issue. I don't know about appartment and house issues because it will be a few years before i move out... so noise might be a problem and this is the reason I am looking into the green cheek as opposed to the sun conure... If noise were not an issue I would have purchased a sun conure 6 months ago!!!

thx a lot in advance.
Nick

ok so here is a update.

I contacted both breeders and I am going to be seeing the cinnamon green cheek conure tomorrow, and it should be ready in about 3 weeks.

I also spoke with the lady who breeds the Jardine parrot and she said that they are only about 3-4 weeks old and they were juz going to be pulled from the nest soon and will begin hand feeding shortly. She also said that she would be willing to teach me to hand feed the baby jardine, and maybe take him home when he is down to 2 feedings. Since I live about 2 minutes from this breeder she said willing to let me start hand feeding the baby soon, to see if I like it... And it should bond with me more!

Hi Nick!
I have alot of experience with both of thee birds and currently keep both a yellow side green cheek and a jardines.
They are both wonderful and both very different birds.
First of all, you are wise to get a just weaned bottle fed baby. Unless you have experience or its the last few days I would be careful abotu finishing them off yourself.
Jardines especially have very delicate lungs and even the smallest aspiration can cause problems for life or death. I have alot of experience and I let a real expert finish mine....but I visited with her every day.
Green cheeks are, of course, the "quiet conure" and very sweet. Ive had a few and even a breeding pair that now ives with my friend who runs a bird store because they were prolific layers and hatchers but not good parents so needed backup nests/parent handy.
My green cheek now, Peach, has been with me for a couple of years and he is a doll. He usually has free flight in the house and responds to commands like "go home"....he is very affectionate ; a cuddly bird...but he did go through a change at maturity where he stopped wanting to be held as much. now he chooses to fly to my shoulder and ride me around and he follows me aorund and sits with me verywhere. He also has a big affair going with a male lovebird; they adore eachother! Peach is a great bird: compact, quiet, smart...a little messy and doesnt talk all that much. But a great chice for someone who likes a bird that will sit with them.

Jardines are close to greys in that they can be very good talkers and are much more intellectual birds. They also have a good sense of humor and can be beaky, even if you raise them from the bottle. My Kitty is very sensitive and even though she was hand raised by me and my son and used to adore my mother, she became a one man bird at around 1 year old, and usually I am the only one who can handle her. She plays almost like a caique in that she will lay under a you and kick a bell and scream. She likes to hang on a toy and flap her wings hard and does a little yelling in the morning.
A Jardines is what we call at Parrots & Company alot of bird.
$500 is a good price for that kind of bird...
When youre thinking about getting a bird, be sure you decide what you want: a cuddly bird or a bird that stands and talks...a very playful bird or a bird that needs alot of input.
Jardines need more input and they need interaction. They talk and whistle alot and can scream a bit in the morning...and they can be a little difficult. They are also very fun and very sweet with a little high voice.

Green Cheeks are very funny little birds. they are much more able to be independent, and though they like interaction and cuddling, they are more standoffish as they get older but they will still ride you around and are a great compact bird for a student.
I am a great fan of them...they play and chirp and act just like a little bird,

Since they are so different, I encourage you to spend as much time as you can and try to meet some adult birds. Then when you choose try to spend as much time as possible with the baby while they are finishing bottle feeding!
I have only met a few pineapples (I have yellow sides and regular green cheeks) and they were more shy than the straight up green cheeks. The different colorations of green cheeks are very nice....I love the yellow sides.

Feel free to ask any questions that you might have...

good uck,

Melina

Nick

I would have to agree with Melina on the handfeeding part.I am an experienced handfeeder and a lot can happen if you don't know what your doing.Though I have experience with many different parrots and birds I can't add anything on the Jardine and GCC.

Melina

Thanks for the wonderful description as well as comparing their personalities.

Marcia

I have always loved the Jardines, had a breeding pair and they were great birds.
I would recommend them and stay with a weaned bird.

Just a little update...
I am the proud owner of a male cinnamon green cheek conure. I brought him home about a month and a half ago. He is adorable...such an active little birdy. He is a little nippy/beaky though. I don't have a problem with his nippyness because I am not afraid of him and I am working diligently to make sure his biting doesn't progress. My mother and sister are afraid of my little conure because they don't understand the beaking behavior. when you reach out to have him step up he will occasionally 'taste' you first before stepping up, and my family thinks he will bite then. I'm trying to keep telling them that he is not going to bite, but it hasn't worked so far. Im training my bird and my family at the same time.

I always tell people that their beak is like a third hand and they use it to lean on when stepping up, the same as an old person would grab your hand when going up a step. No need to be afraid of it.
