Poicephalus Senegals, Jardines, Meyers, Red-Bellied are just the few in this parrot family.

Default thinking about a sengal

I have been reading up on parrots, and so far I have narrowed my choices to sengals, erectus, 'teils, possiby parrotlets and possibly budgies. I was wondering if a sengal is going to be loud enough to disrput people in apartments near me? also, would a clipped sengal be able to spend most of the day on a playground above its' cage, or would it fly away? how destructive are they?

I am hoping to find a bird that seeks attention rather then tolerates it, and I am thinking that a senga would seek out attention, but I just want to be sure. I definetly dont want to force attention on a bird who would rather be left alone to play. thanks for any help!

I have a Senagal named Isabelle and she loves attention although she is a very busy little bird. She rarely will stay just sitting on my shoulder. She has to empty everything off the table and must taste eveything she will see. Senagals tend to be one person birds as my husband found out shortly after we purchased her. She will alow him to feed her but tends to run after him with her beek ready. She is a lot of fun to watch and play with. I hopes this enlightens you somewhat about the breed. She is not a loud bird and I wouldn't expect her to talk like other bird species. She will wolf wistle but I have not heard any speech other than wistling. I also would say that she does have her own cage separate from the other birds because she likes to show the others she is the dominate bird and will run after them. Good luck with your search for bird of your dreams.

I am owned by 1 Senegal named Sydney she is now 11 years old.She is hell on wings who doesn't realize she's a small bird.If I were the other birds I would eat her in one gulp. But she's the one who tries to eat them in one gulp.I think she has a few screws missing. She's been this way since she came to me 10 years ago.She is not allowed to interact with the other birds because she doesn't know how to play nice.So her play time is usually done alone.

Exclamation Re: thinking about a sengal

Senegal Parrots and other small Poicephalus parrots have a loudness of 2, a shrilness of 1 and mimicry of 2. They aren't built for a family with small children. They would possibly be suited with a family of older children. It is also stated that Poicephalus parrots are not stated as family pets. The will usually form a strong bond with one person and ward off everyone else with behaviour that could be described as vicious. Females are dominant. On no account must two adult females be kept together: one will kill the other or cause it so much stress that it dies.

Now this question is asked frequently. Which species is right for me? Well: There are approxamitely 250 species of parrots, so choosing one as a companion may be bewildering at first. However, only about 180 species are well known or fairly well known in captivity. It is important to keep in mind that your parrot is not an ornament or a toy but a living thing such as humans itself.

Most parrot-owners have a tendency to have troubles or problems with the parrot and re-home their parrots. To successfully rehome a parrot is difficult. It has been put in your home to be with for the rest of its life, not to be moved from home to home during the years. It is hard for the bird physically and emotionally. Just as it would be hard for you to move to a new school or house over and over again.

Carefully think over if you need a small parrot or a big parrot and look at your environment. Are you willing to let their nails dig into your favourite couch/curtains? It is all a big role of responsibility.

Good luck to you and your new parrot!
