Does anyone have any experiences with Senegal Parrots and cats?
Is it allright to allow interaction between them? My senegal (Chumley, he lives
with his cage door open at all times) lately he has taken a liking to going for
"walk-abouts" where he climbs down and searches out my cats. While it appears Chumley is not a threat to my cats I am worried that he will turn aggresive if I allow this behavior to continue. My cats (Missy and KC) were both babies when I brought them home, so they are not aggresive towards Chumley, and Chumley even shows affection towards Missy with grooming and kisses. I am away at work every day and have noticed a change in Chumley in his attitude towards me. Should I be concerned about this? Does anyone else have a bird / cat relationship where there is physical interaction between them? If so, was there a noticable change in thier birds' personality after such behavior started? I would hate to have to put Chumley in his cage every night but he is more aggresive towards me since this behavior has started and I fear he thinks of Missy as his "master" because when she wants him to "go home" she chases him home, and he obeys every time, but if I try to put him home he bluffs and sometimes even bites. Anyone have experience with a situation like this? Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks
I have a cat and a Senegal and a bunch of other birds.I don't care how friendly a cat and bird are there's a such thing as instinct. One day it's going to come and you will have one less pet and it won't be the cats.
Supervise at all times and don't take any unnecessary risks.Cats are preditors and birds are prey.
When I purchased one of my Eclectus the owner of the store was so upset because she had just sold a baby Senegal to someone. They left it unattended
with their cat well the cat did what came natural and killed the baby Senegal. The person that was so irresponsible came back to the store looking to purchase another baby Senegal. The store owner refused and the person was irrate. You know I would of done the same thing.Refused to sell them another Senegal.
It was a baby how could anyone do that?Common sense should of taken over.
It's not cute when people allow a cat and a bird to play together. The SALIVA in itself is TOXIC to a bird and if not treated in time is FATAL.
Yeah, cats and birds do not mix. My parents made the same mistake when i was young, our cockatiel just had the run of the house, even when we were out. One day we came home and there was nothing but feathers left - thanks to the cat.
It was a pretty dumb move, but I was like seven years old at the time and wasn't involved in making any decisions
I have two mature cats (mother and son) and two free roaming Macaws (a B&G and a Military) the cats are smart enuogh to keep their distance from the "Buzz Saws".....any smaller and I agree..cats will be cats..also, even in play, a cat can scratch it's playmate and I've read in several books that the cats claws can carry a bacteria that is especialy harmful to Parrots. According to what I've read the infection consumes the bird quickly.
Even though we have never had problems with our cats and birds I don't trust them. I have been scratched bad by my cats on occation (totally my fault didn't see them and steped on a tail) and the scratchs became infected even though I had cleaned them. I don't even want to think about what a simple scratch from one of the cats could do to my birds.
Absolutely!!!
The cat is bieng monitored bye the person taking the picture.
I observed something at a young age on my Granfather's farm...the barn cats( who fed themselves bye hunting) would NEVER mess with a mature chichen, but the bitties were their targets. They might have been hungery but they were'nt stupid...they recognize that size does make a differance
My cats have made it very clear that they want to eat my senegal. They can't even get within 10 feet of it the way my house is set up. But these cats are outdoor cats, and they hunt mice in a woodpile out back, and they got the same crazy look in their eye and even lunged in the direction of the cage.
I have no doubt if the bird landed infront of them theyd try to eat it.
Also regarding the person who wanted to buy another senegal. I would have demanded that they get the **** out of my store, not to mention not selling them another bird...
I used to work in the fish department of a pet store (a very responsible store)*00000 <<My parrot typed that
Anyways I had many a screaming match with customers who disregarded my advice, came back with a bag of dead fish, blamed me, and demanded replacements.
I told one woman, who insisted after I told her why not, that a clownfish *(a saltwater fish) would be fine with her goldfish...
I told her her level of ignorance frightened me.
She still wanted the fish.j90

Ugh, I worked at a pet store for about 4 months out of sheer desperation. I will never do that again. I had never seen so many dead animals in all my life.
I was one of the few people there that knew jack **** about animals and I was actually resented for it.
Now a days, you have to educate yourself as best as you can in order to know if you are being told the truth or not about an animal or bird...so many times I've found that I knew much more about the bird or fish than person that is selling them...you can hear "sure that fish will be OK with your others".....all the while I'm thinking "sure it will be fine"..if you want your tank emptied out bye this new fish!!!....I have stepped up more than once and given my two cents...the staff give me the "evil eye" the rest of the time I'm there..."EXCUUUUSE ME"!!..I just hate to see people getting "screwed"!!!
