Hi and welcome! And congrats on your new bird. As well as congrats on seeking out a forum to learn what you can about your new guy. I would recommend getting Parrots for Dummies, as it is an excellent book on parrot care, nutrition as well as good advice on behavior. There is so much for you to know and a book will definitely help you. As for the basics....

He should be in the most active part of the house during the day as birds are very social, but at night they need to have good quality sleep or else like people they will be cranky, noisy, and nippy. Well humans usualy aren't nippy but you get the idea. He will need a good diet, Is he a baby? Or an adult? Clipped wings or full flighted? Do you know what he is currently eating? Seed, pellets? Does he already eat fruits and veggies? Also what kind of cage does he have? It should be a minimum of 20"x20", with perches of varying diameters to promote foot health. Plenty of toys as well. For the first day or so it is recommended that he be kept in his cage to settle in and adjust to his new surroundings. However I think it will depend on his temperament. If he is a baby and showing no fear that i do not believe it is necessary, but if he is an adult he might need to. I usualy play it by ear. It really depends on him. Some birds need to stay in their cages and have them partially covered for a couple of weeks. Let him be your guide. And remember patience's is the key with birds. But you definitely need a trip to your local book store. Don't hesitate to ask questions that what we are all here for.

I'd prepare myself for a period of adjustment as the bird adapts to the new home. This can include screaming and nipping. Ride it out in the highest fashion--maintain your poise and a calm demeanor and never reprimand if you are bitten, do what you can to pretend it didn't happen and walk away for a bit.

Talk softly and move smoothly and slowly when in the same room as the cage, put differently, no loud noises or abrupt movements until you can estimate your bird's temperament.

It sounds like whomever had the bird previously cared about nutrition, so I'd imagine your bird's mental health should likewise be in good shape. What is the situation on your acquiring the bird? I ask since it sounds like you're picking one up secondhand (rescue/foster). It can be important to understand the situation; maybe she's an escape artist with a penchant for chewing antique wood furniture or iPods, or maybe she's no good around kids.

Do like Kimba suggests, and I would recommend a copy or two of Bird Talk to get an overview of the path you're heading down as a bird companion. Best of luck!

Hello,
Just found your post. We have a 6 year old male Senegal. He was a little noisy for a while, when he's not being payed attention to. He is sweet only to certain people, usually females. But when he is sweet, he is very sweet and loves to show off and mumble. He has what I think is a great vocabulary. He says about 15 different word/phrases and he mimicks many sounds. One of our other parrots makes the sound of the phone ringing, and the Senegal answers it, "Hello"!.

One thing weird about the Senegal, he gets freaked out with new toys. It takes him, sometimes days to approach a new toy.

Give your birdie lots of attention, he will give you lots back! Senegals are great companion birds. They are pretty silly, too!

Take care,

Aunt Birdie

Hello Steph and Welcome

I have a 10 year old Senegal who I have had for 10 years.Sydney was rescued from the crazy cage where all the unhandled birds were kept. When my bestfriend gave Sydney to me h/s was a little unpredictable biting and all.
But over all Sydney is a sweet bird who thinks h/s is a large bird.Sydney goes after my Macaws and shows no fear.Just whatever you do secure all cage doors and where the bowls go because my Sydney is an escape artist.
