I have 2 senegals one male and one female, they are both 3 and have been together in the same cage for 3 yrs. 2 mornings ago I awoke to find a LOT of blood on the females wing and a LOT of feathers pulled out. On closer observation I noticed the male was attacking her. I seperated them straight away, this is the first time they have ever had any kind of upset.
MY dilemar now is do I run out and buy a new cage and KEEP them seperated or should I try putting them together again? also is there any reason as to why this happened?
please help me
If it were me, I'd get another cage, even if it's only temporary. Worst case is, you end up with an extra cage. I know there were a pair of Cockatoos at the rescue (before I started there) that were together for 15 years and one turned on the other all of the sudden and killed her. I've never been a fan of keeping birds in the same cage...you never know what's going to happen!
Welcome to the forum. So far everyone has given you good advice. I agree with them keep them in seperate cages but close together.I have 1 senegal and it is kept alone it has gotten out in the past and killed several of my birds.I am now owned by 18 FIDS.The ones that get along stay in the same cage but the cages are large enough and they are watched daily and so far I haven't had any problems. There are only a few of them that stay together.
I would blame it on raging hormone the problems that you are having with your senegals.I hope everything works out with them.
Thank you all for your help, I have them in seperate cages next to each other now, one last question i will be moving soon and was hoping to put them into an avary together in the hope to breed them, after recent events is it best to forget this idea and keep them seperated?
It all depends on if you are willing to risk losing one or the other? Is it worth that?If it was me I wouldn't want to risk that.If your looking to breed you might want to look for a proven pair from a reputable seller/breeder but do your homework there are a lot of SCAMS out there.I wish you well.
I think that if your birds are in an avary you do stand a chance of breeding them.
i also have that each season the cock chases the hen bird to get her to go to nest.
provided the hen can fly away from the cock things should be fine.
with one hen bird I have she will always fly away from the cock bird untill she is willing to go to nest.
when the hen is willing to nest I see the cock bird going to the hen and feed her.
I also know of case of west australian king parrots where the cock bird chases the hen to the point of death.
That was a pair that had young ever season for 5 years.
the hen was not ready to nest and the cock would not let up on the hen.
