Default Großsittich translation

Hi everyone!

I'm new here! I work as a translator and I have the following to text to translate for a German petshop. It's part of a specification for a new store they've just opened:

German:
Rund 30 verschiedene Finken, rund 20 Kanarienvögel und 20 Wellensittiche sowie 30 Sittiche in 3 Volieren mit eingebautem Baum für Großsittiche und Zwergpapageien

English:
Around 30 different finches, 20 different canaries and 20 budgerigars as well as 30 parakeets in 3 aviaries with trees for ___________ and miniature parrots.

As you can see I'm really stuck on "Großsittich"! "Sittich" = "parakeet" but I can't find any translation for "Großsittich" and I was wondering if we differentiate at all in English.......? That's why I need the help of people who know birds! =) Is there a "great parakeet" maybe?!

Thank you for your help!

Dorothy

From what I could gather its a term used like how we use parrot. look at this web site Großsittiche . that and a couple other sites i looked at seemed to refer to small parrots IE tiels, budgies, conures and such. Like many terms there might not be an exact translation.

Default Re: Großsittich translation

hey there! my wife is german so maybe i can help but i realize this maybe a lil late.

in german they say sittich & groß sittich. groß sittich generally refers to the larger parakeets. groß in german means big. however a cockatoo or a parrot are not considered under sittich or groß sittich.

for example, we call ziegensittich or in english kakariki a groß sittich. however, a budgerigar is known as a wellensittich and it is not considered to be a groß sittich. i hope this helps answer your question. i dont think there is an exact translation to english for groß sittich. no offense to native born english speakers, but as a person who speaks a few languages, english is known to have a smaller vocabulary as compared to german or russian for example. again no offense intended. if you do find an exact translation i´d be happy to know.

have a nice day

This might be because parakeets is a generic term for many different species that share certain characteristics as the length and shape of the tail (long and tapered). Australian budgerigars are called just parakeets in America but it's incorrect so maybe they are referring to the 'large parakeets' (like Ringnecks, Rosellas, Monks etc) as opposed to the 'small parakeets' which would be the budgies.

LOL. English was my first language. I also speak Italian and French fluently and am passable in speaking modern Greek and Portuguese. You're absolutely right in you implication that, in relation to other languages, English just plain stinks. It has to be the most messed-up language of all Latin-based languages.
