Carlito: Back in his cage.
But will he be counted in the Nielsen ratings?
WTVS-TV (Channel 56) station manager Dan Alpert passed along the engaging tale of PBS fan Carlito, an umbrella cockatoo owned by Msgr. William Easton of Royal Oak's National Shrine of the Little Flower.
Alpert in turn got the story from station volunteer Mary Schorn, who passed along the Easton story in the church bulletin as follows:
"About two weeks ago, Carlito got out of his cage again. We have no idea how long he enjoyed his little escapade, but there was evidence that he had been in every corner of the sun porch during the time of his liberation.
"The amazing thing ... is that he actually turned on the TV. When we discovered him, he was placidly watching Channel 56. It was some kind of children's program, and he was enjoying it immensely. He must have been watching when we turned it on for him and learned how to do it himself."
In a note to Alpert, Easton wrote: "We often leave Channel 56 on while we are away to keep him entertained."
