Over the past month or so I have been doing lots of research on the internet. I really want a bird after my cockateil was lost to a fatal accident a few years ago. I really do love birds and i am ready to commit again.
I am now facing the question of what type of bird to gat, and after reading about them on www.pionusparrots.com , I have become very interested in pionus because they are supposedly quite, sweet, look very cool, and dont need 24/7 attention, (Im a working man). I want to know how long they live, if what ive said is true, and if any of you have had experience on pionus enough to give me any advice. BTW- If not a pionus, cna anyone else give me advice on a small(ish) species of parrot that is not amazon-loud? |

pi's are awesome! And they are as you describe, however they get just as hormonal as an amazon, and theirs a 50/50 chance they they will be a one person bird. Personally I've found that the blue headed are much more social than the white caps, these are the only two I've had experience with. There are some health concerns with them such as aspergillose infections, very common in them, and obesity, but they are otherwise very healthy and stable parrots. I would put their life span if well cared for, and by that I mean diet, lighting, and flight, at 50. Clipped I would hazard to say less time, simply because of their risk for aspergillose lung infections, as well as lung sensitivity as a whole. And flight strengthen their muscle and respiratory systems. I often wounder that if they were alway kept flighted if they would have such a rep for lung issues.

What do you think about a caique. I have been reading about them and I think that will be my next bird. You can check them out at http://caiquesite.com/Manual/21a%20%20breeding.htm. Let me know what you think?

While they look like very nice birds, they seem to be a bit out of my price range. Around here i can get blue headed Pionus for 200$, which to me seems more resonable.

I know what you mean. I saw a few in september for $650.00 ea. Thats higher than what you want to spend but much better than the $950.00 I have been seeing. I can't beleave you haven't received several comments from owners. Good Luck.

You could check out conures, parrolets, parakeets and segals. The temperment depends on the individuals pionus. I have seen ones that make you melt and others that are beasts. Ask questions, i find that you geat more indepth info from parrot owners you can talk to rather than a a random website.
