Parrots are noisy animals and there is very little you can do about it but ekkies are not screamers by nature (actually, they are very quiet birds with just one or two occasional calls during the day, if anything) so something must be making her unhappy for her to be so noisy.. They usually call when they feel lonely and/or bored and/or frustrated. Is she getting enough attention during the day? The larger species need, at least, four hours of interaction and out of cage time. Is it possible you are feeding too much protein? Ekkies are very difficult to feed right because they require a diet low in protein and nutrients and very high in fiber which translates into a LOT of veggies and leafy greens. Plus, make sure you keep her to a strict natural daylight schedule with full exposure to dawn and dusk to keep her endocrine system healthy.

I am always kept legumes, grains, seeds in cage and the fruit for example, at morning a piece of apple and carrot at noon and a piece of radish at night I am giving another day broccoli at morning and vegetables at noon and apples at night and so on. Is this right? Is better not to keep the beans, grains and seeds in the cage? I am giving the bird these colored pellets of fruits and flavors of many of the vitamins and the bird is preferred. |

No seeds at all during the day, just a small portion (1/5 of a cup) for dinner. Cooked grains are OK as long as they are cereals (wheat, triticale, oats, etc) and mixed with cooked veggies but not too many pulses, they are high in protein. And no colored pellets at all, ever!

Parrots vocalize for many reasons but, mainly, it's a breeding thing and, although your bird is a bit too young for it, they do mature faster when they are fed pellets because of the soy in them (soy has a strong estrogenic effect) PLUS high protein puts them in condition and you have been feeding a lot of protein so, yes, I am sure that it has something to do with it. The other thing about ekkies is that a large number of them simply do not like to live in a cage. I have one that was abandoned at a grooming salon, the people dropped him to get his nails trimmed and never picked him up. The salon owner kept him for a year or so but finally asked me to take him in because he screamed all day long and very, very loudly. He was also very aggressive and a chronic plucker so the poor thing was ugly, mean and noisy... not what you would call pet material
And, although it took many months for him to become my friend (he doesn't go after people any longer and steps up for me with no problem -even kisses me!) he stopped screaming in a matter of two weeks. He is one of the percentage of parrots that simply will not resign himself to live in a cage. Once he was free, in the company of other parrots, kept to a strict natural daylight schedule and fed right (he also ate colored pellets), he turned into a different bird. |

Well, parrots are not for people who work more than a few hours outside the house. They cannot stand been by themselves, they need constant company. Some resign themselves to a sad and lonely existence but most start developing behavioral problems -like yours.
And yes, I bet she loves sunflower seeds! But they are bad for her. |
