I am a parrot rescuer. Owning a large parrot is more like adopting a child (with special needs) who never grows up. M2 and U2 are appealing to the eye and if enough homework is done they make great pets. Noise, what noise? My cockatoos yell when they know I'm home but to me it is like hearing the kids yelling and having a good time. I forget how disturbing it is to some people. These animals are smarter than we know. I would recommend a less shuffled-type cockatoo for your first parrot and remember that each one has a different personality, so take your time to choose the right one, for this is a life time commitment. Learn from the mistakes of others and you and your cockatoo (or parrot) will benefit for life.
Are all cockatoos terrors? That would depend on what one would consider what terrors is. I have M2s, U2s and a G2 and do not consider them terrors there just being cockatoos. Good luck. |

I have a bare-eyed male cockatoo and he is my first bird. I have done much research before purchasing this breed and I do agree with some of the things some people have said, however, saying that you can't feed them right or maintain their health is a silly comment. Unless you are eating fast food everyday, they can eat the same healthy things that you eat. In the very beginning it can be costly, however there are many people that sell a used cage for half the price of new. I got a brand new six hundred dollar cage for two hundred and fifty because it had a different colored drop tray. You can maintain the health by feeding them fresh fruits and vegetables like we should be eating daily anyway. Full spectrum lighting for about five hours a day will help with additional health benefits for the parrots. My guy is wonderful. With a houseful of kids and dogs, he is pretty calm and happy. As long as they have plenty of toys and points of interest they stay content. I change the toys every so many months and made a beautiful tree made out of different grapewood branches bought off of ebay for a third of the price of a pet store. As many say, it all depends on how much time you have for them, how big a cage you can afford, many toys and a healthy diet and environment. I stagger the routine so they don't get used to or expect the same things at the same time everyday which is a plus with cockatoos.
