Breeding Do your nonaviculturist friends sympathize with your round-the-clock feedings of hungry chicks, or perhaps you're considering breeding another species of bird. Look here for support from other bird breeders who have "been there, done that."

Question 12 eggs all infertile?? Need advice?

Hi

I'm a newbie on this forum and really need some help with my what I think is a pair of African greys?

We have now had 4 clutches of 3 eggs and all have been infertile

Both parrots came to us from other homes and we have had Corky (Female) about 14 years and Jasper (Male we think about 9 months)

I cant be sure they are the same breed as the male is smaller and has red flecks of plumage whereas the female is a larger bird altogether.

If the are different species can they interbreed, any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Well, I don't know where you live but if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, your birds should not be breeding at all, and, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere, you must have forced a very early breeding season to have gotten four clutches already so, either way, you are doing something wrong. Namely, not keeping them to a strict natural daylight schedule with full exposure to dawn and dusk so your birds endocrine systems are screwed up. But I guess you already know this as your birds don't produce any fertile eggs. In any case, that female should not be allowed to lay any more eggs. She already laid too many and will become depleted and/or eggbound if you continue pushing it so take away the nest box and make her days short asap to stop gonadal activity.

Breeding birds is not a matter of putting a male and female together. It requires a lot of knowledge and discipline and attempting to do it without them puts the birds at risk.
