Default Treats of Training

Treats are a major tool for training your Parrot. The biggest problem is, most products on the market as treats for birds are large and take to long for parrots to eat. By the time the parrot finishes it's treat, they've lost interest in training. What do you do? Use small treats that can be eaten quickly. For example: Raisins, cut them in half to lessen consumption time. Our birds love (would give their souls for) Cheerios. That’s right, the good, old fashioned and nutritious whole-grain Cheerio. Do not get the ones with added sugar…look for the old fashioned yellow box Cheerios (there’s no added sugar). These have served us well. And for Rio, our RLA, we use half an unsalted peanut. Find what they like the most and keep it as small as possible for quick consumption. What do you all use?

Default Re: Treats of Training

This is a good post. I was wondering what to use for my conure. He takes too long with every food I give him. We will be getting an Amazon in a few months. I will try the cheerios.

Actually Cheerios (even the ones in the yellow box) have both sugar and salt added. They also have two kinds of corn starch and wheat starch (good for nothing but fattening).

If you need a good, healthy treat for training, bake your own birdy bread. It takes less than 2 minutes to put the ingredients in a bread machine, it keeps very well in the freezer, it's very nutritious and birds love it!
