Smile Dust from the cockatoo

Having got a Ducorps Cockatoo from a friend who bought him from some
very bad owners, well he rescued him realy. Well as he has got a parrot
of his own he asked us if we would take him on, and after taking one look
at the poor thing we said yes. He hardley had a feather to call his own,
frightened off his own shadow and screaching non stop. Now he is fully
feathered, dosent make a lot of noise, and comes out of his cage and sits
with us,plays with toys and enjoys a good and varied diet. The one thing
that I am now trying to get the better off is the ammount of dust he
generates as it gets on my wifes chest a bit and can effect her breathing
at times. I have just bought a good quality air purifier which the makers
say will help a lot, vacume the house and clean his cage daily. If anyone
has any other suggestions please reply.

If I could some how sell my cockatoo dust my bank account would surpass Bill Gates but it does not. I know the feeling my cockatoos are dust monsters and I give them showers about every week or so and it really helps. Try misting, shower or just fill up the sink with room temp. water and let him soak. If he has never had a bath he could be afraid and it will take time. This should help .......

Thank you for your replies, and advice. Showers every morning helps, and
the high powered air cleaner, which is a portable unit, helps big time. So
things are looking good. I am on a learning curve with members of the
parrot family never owning one before, but have 40 yrs experience with
other species, so I know you are never to old to learn, and I shall be
asking for advice in the future.

I read that these guys are soft because theres always tonnes of dust on the feathers and they need the dust to keep the feathers in good shape so theres always more.

Even my little senegal is kinda dusty. i cant imagine how much dust you get. Adorable bird though. thanks for your rescue.
