i just got a new sun conure on sunday, two months old that im hand feeding. hes great, he already steps up, he never bites, and hes friendly with everyone. the breeder i bought him (i think its a him) from told me to keep seeds and fruit in his cage so that he will start eating on his own. before i got him i had a cockatiel, and i was trying to switch her to a pellet diet around the time that she died (tragic accident with a cat), so i still have the pellets at home. my question is should i get him to start eating seeds and fruit and then switch him to a pellet diet, or just start him off with pellets (which are also easier for him to eat than opening seeds and stuff)?
You should start with the pellets and soak them in some water so they are a little easier to eat, make sure to change them about every 4 hours because they will spoil. as he gets older decrease the amount of water so that he will start eating the pellets dry.
The "experts" say pellets (We got our birds as adults so I didn't know about the soaking for youngsters, but it makes sense.) and table food, with occasional seeds as a treat. Our suns eat everything we eat except meat. (The male would eat that, too, if we let him.) Grains, fruit, vegetables, eggs, cheese. We always share with them. Birds are big copy cats and want what we have. We probably give ours too many seeds, but they have a balanced, healthy diet. Experiment and see what your little darling likes. Good luck and have fun. By the way, any pix?
thanks, ill do that. he seems to be ok eating the pellets dry so i dont think i need to soak them, but whatever it cant hurt. i dont see how i to add pix but when i figure it out ill put'em up
thanks, i tried putting up more but i couldn't figure out how to not make them HUGE. oh and btw does anyone know around what age he'll start eating on his own? i gave him seeds before and i thought he was eating them, but he was just opening them, taking out the inside and not eating it
