Default Greater Vasa owners...

... tell me ALL about your birds!

When i first had a look around this forum yesterday and saw Kimba and maybe molly's photos my heart almost stopped beating... incredible. I have never seen these birds before, they are amazing. I did a little research last night, but was wondering what they are like, personality wise?
Soo amazing..

They are amazing to say the least. I've breed/raised/rehabbed just about every kind of parrot out there and Vasa's are by far my favorite parrot. They are very intelligent, playful, independent, cuddly, quiet. Most behavior issue that are common with other parrots do not exist with vasa's because they are polygamous by nature, female have 4-6 males to attend them. So there's no mate bonding issues, or territorial aggression. Some are great talkers, others never talk. They like to pull tricks on their owners to get what they want. Eve did this to get a hot dog once. He flew up to the china cabinet where is is not allowed and refused to move. I had to go get him, he waited till I was in reach of him and than took off in the direction of the hot dog knowing he could reach the forbidden food item before I could. He managed to make off with half the hot dog.
They are avid flyers, and they LOVE to fly. It's better to flight train them than clip. Clipping an adult is useless as they have no problems flying with even the best clip. They like to dance and flip over on there backs, and generally roll around. Odd for a parrot. In the wild they will gang up on campers, one will roll around and act ill to distract the humans, while the others will raid the camp for food!

Hi Jodie!

Vinnie (aka Vinnie Vidi Vici, aka VinVin Situvation) hatched April 20, and I just brought him home two weeks ago; so everything is still kind of new, but I joined this forum because I saw all of Kimba's posts, and she is a really fantastic resource.

Vinnie is also my first parrot, so I don't have anyone to compare him to. He is for the most part very quiet. He does what I call imitations of a fake parrot, because once he's full of food and play, he just sits totally still -- not napping -- just completely still, watching everything going on around him but call his name and he won't even blink.

He has a bad habit of pacing the bottom of his cage when he wants out, and unfortunately I can't let him out every time he wants it, so I'm trying to get him more interested in his toys. He can't seem to be bothered with puzzle toys, maybe he is too young? But he loves shredding pinatas. His new thing is to dunk his wooden toys in water. If he finds they're just a little bit dry, back in the water they go. Here is a picture in case you missed it:

Green Vinnie

He also whistles softly, and twice I've heard him talking some kind of baby jibberish. He coos AND he whines.

His wings AND a couple tailfeathers are clipped. Maybe that's why he can't fly? It doesn't stop him from trying. He just doesn't give up and will dive right off his playstand to the floor 4 or 5 times a day. He climbs all over his cage and slides down head first to his food bowls. He tries to eat while hanging upside down, but isn't very successful.

His favorite color seems to be yellow and his favorite treat walnuts. Cheddar cheese goldfish are a close second. He flings oranges.

He's a stubborn little sweetheart! I can't wait to have more stories to share with you.

Here are a couple uber-boring videos of him doing very little:

Maybe molly...they clipped some tail feathers???? That's probably why he can't fly, the wings are not enough. Strange thou, you never see that on other parrots. Maybe that's the one way to actually ground a vasa.

Yes at least two tail feathers. At first I thought this was for identification (he was DNA'd before I picked him up) but now I wonder if it was for flight reasons. Either way, he goes down!

Aww i want one now!
But i don't think Henry, my overprotective Green Cheek, would like me 'seeing' another bird.
They sound like they would make such a great little companion, it's hard to imagine a QUIET bird after 4 years with a GCC! They look amazing. I had a look around at some sites and saw how the females lose the feathers on their head during the mating period.. haha very strange.
They are just incredible. Thanks so much, the pictures are great too! Vinnie looks so cheeky with his green feet!
I haven't shut up about these birds in the last 2 days, i think my mum is sick of hearing it. Appearance wise they are the most incredible birds, they have an almost prehistoric kind of look to them.
And i would have never imagined a bird coming up with such a plan to get at a hot dog.. hahahaha.. although Henry would go to such lengths for a Twistie i'm sure.

Default Oh Happy Day!.....More Vasa Lovers

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum.
I did a mass search on google for Vasas and after scrolling through what seemed like a million pages I found this site and post.
I'm trying to connect with other Vasa lovers and Vasa owners in hopes someone may be able to help me find a baby of my own. So far I've only been able to locate 1 breeder who has any babies, we're waiting for results from DNA testing to see how many little boys she has, as there are 2 people ahead of me on the list waiting for baby boys also. I've contacted a couple other breeders I was able to find her in the states, but none of them have any babies left. So I'm eagerly awaiting the results and hoping there will be a baby in the bunch for me )
You guys keep your fingers crossed for me.

Hi and welcome! Good luck I hope you find one, but keep in mind that vasa breeding season is over, and vasa's only breed once a year, and they are not successful every year. But keep your eye open, they do show up in parrot shops from time to time. And when they do, word of mouth goes around on message boards, and bird clubs I believe there is still one in NJ, somewhere. They are fantastic birds to say the least, if a vasa is what you are looking for have patience, they are worth the wait.

Hi Gypseye:

Have you looked at birdbreeders.com? It's a database where breeders can list their available babies. I found only one result for Greater Vasa; they are in California:

Url Edited

It really hadn't occured to me to prefer one gender over the other, since each sex has its own distinct traits. When I first paid my deposit for Vinnie he hadn't been DNA sexed. His breeder said "if I were you, I'd take the calmest one" so I did, not knowing if it was a male or female. Had he been female, I was going to name her Molly, thus my username.

I do know that all of his siblings are spoken for, if not already home by now. VinVin hails from Featherlust Farms, in Connecticut.

Good Luck in your search!

Hi Molly,

Yes I've tried Featherlust...all of there babies are taken already. The breeder I found here in CA I found on birdbreeders.com, she's in Vacaville. I'm just waiting to to find out the sex of the the last couple of babies. It's tortue I tell ya! lol. But as Kimba stated...I'm being patient and waiting for just the right baby to bring home. I'm not sure if the "calm baby" approach works for Vasa but I can tell it didn't work for my Senegal. Francis was the sweetest calmest little baby, after he'd been home a couple of weeks and started figuring life was gonna be grand he came right on out of that shell of his, and hasn't gone back in. He's a sweetheart though, a little moody at times but knows when enoughs enough, and just how far we'll play into his shenanigans. i'm really hoping the intergration of the new baby won't be too hard on either of them, as Francis has been the only bird here in the home for the past 2 years (or close to 2 years). So it may take him a little getting used to. So we've set up the new cage in a different room to give the new baby and Francis time to adjust. We were keeping in mind the size difference and the fact that the Vasa more resembles a bird of prey in apperence and movement and that in itself may be enough to scare poor Francis out of his wits. So we're trying to be proactive and not reactive...waiting until a crisis arrives. Hopefully our stategy will work.

So Molly, how's life with little Vinny, has he been working on his dance moves?

Talk to you guys later
