Default Flying and screaming

Hi all,

I've got a male tiel for about a week now. I keep the cage door open at all times, so he can do what he wishes. When night comes, I put him in the cage and cover him with a blanket. I just noticed today that when I take away the cover in the morning (and I usually go to work), he does fly around the room quite a lot, and every time he flies, he makes a sound. The sound is not very loud (I've had tiels before )

I'm afraid that if, when he does this, I give him the "blanket" treatment, he won't know why I'm punishing him for : the sounds he makes, or the flying.

Does he do this to get attention, or is this just normal behavior? What do you suggest I should do?

Best,
John

hi and welcome to the forum
I hope that you enjoy your stay here with us.

With the blanket treatment I would move the bird to a quiet room then have the blanket over the cage.

Do you have your bird out while you are at work ?

Is anyone home to supervise the bird ?

Thanks!

Basically yes, I have the bird out while I'm at work. Also, when I'm at work I leave the radio on - so that he'll hear something

So there's noone to supervise the bird. Is this bad?
p.s. he finally stopped flying, and went back to his cage

Best,
John

hi John

the thought of an unsupervied bird worrys me alittle as if your bird get his foot caught or hurts himself while flying around you wont know and the shock may lead to death.

I know you are trying to do the best you can with your tiel.

Safety for your bird has to be put first.

better safe than sorry.

I have 2 tiels inside and I have them in the cage when i go out.

as you have only had your bird for a week he would not be settled in to his new home yet.

that is why he squawks when he flys around.

Thanks for the answers!

So, let me see if I get this straight:

1. Squawking is normal, since he's new to the surroundings.

2. When he's flying around, he seems to be in "fly mode". That is, he still answers to my command - to sit on my hand, but he just sits for a short while, and he's looking for a new place to fly to. I just want to know if this is again ok - that is, I don't want him to get the idea that he's the boss around here

3. He's (in my opinion) very friendly and curious. He just came and sat on my laptop keyboard for a few times He just comes, walks on the keyboard, even sat on top of the monitor, and stuff like that. When I take him in my hand, he again just stays for a while. He's in a playful mode Again, is this ok?

4. If the answer to Q3 is ok, when should I to play with him - that is, hold him in my hand, pet him, make him sit on my shoulder? (that is, to make sure he won't keep on flying away)

5. He's been flying around for more than 2 hours. When is it gonna stop?

1) I think because the bird is new that the noise will ease as he gets used to you.

A2) its good that your tiel obeys your commands I think with the flying around after a short time your tiel seems to be looking for away out so to speak.
Not Settled in time should help this.

A3)Your tiel wants to explore and play in my opinion thats fine for both of you playing with your bird is a good thing.
just dont let the playing lead to biteing.
as your tiel is new to your house and you it is important to bond with your bird if and when you can spend 10 to 15 minutes at a time to talk, play, teach etc, etc in each session.
your bird will get used to this and want to spend more time with you. ( bonding )

the last answer also will help with the flying.

i'm sure you will bond soon. I would give it some time as my friend has many birds and told me everyone bonds but some take longer than others and the noises will quiet over time.

Screaming parrots can often be distracted from their yelling by flying them on your finger, or taking them for a walk around the house. Plenty of exercise by flying around (or flapping his wings if he’s clipped).
