I have a 3 year-old Male CAG who loves to mimic sounds and environmenal noises. He says "hello" in two ifferent voices and says it appropriately (when someone enters a room or when the phone is ringing). BUT ... three years ... and that's it, even though we talk with him alllll the time. We used to whistle more and he would mimic that ... and so we stopped doing that and started talking more, but no change in his talking skills.
While I will love him equally whether he talks more or not, I would love to have him speak more. I recently bought a CD that repeats phrases and such, but so far it has had no effect. Any thoughts? What have your experiences been in relaion to Greys talkig? Time it took? Things that help?
my grey is just over 2 and talks for england he says hello dad i have just got a baby greenwing so im hoping it will lurn from my cag but it says up the blues giz a kiss dad who,s that hello joey hello dad hello ron put the kettle on and loads of other things i noticed someone put a post up saying there parrot dances lol do some reading when a grey bobs its head up and down its a sighn of nervousness so i assume your belting your music the bird gets nervouse and bobs its head but ppl refer to this as dancing not at all
Some Greys never say much. Some just mimick noises/sounds. I would say your Grey isn't going to be much of a talker. And like you said, that's okay!! We love them anyway! It sounds like you are doing everything you can do to help him in his talking...Talking to a bird is the BEST way to get the bird talking. Have you tried videos? Not just tapes or CDs but DVDs and other types of videos/movies? My Grey loves Lassie movies...and Sesame Street videos of counting and ABCs. Maybe your Grey just doesn't have much to say YET!?
Hang in there!!
when we got bruno in may 2006 we knew he was a non talking tag (we was happy with that) he was supposed to be two and a half year old but we think he is older . then we got a baby cag in october who has started saying hello, cummon, love you ect then last week we was talking to the birds and bruno said hello we couldnt believe it, he says it more than 10 times a day now maybee he will pick up other words but im buzzing that he said hello
Coco talks up a storm, but usually only when he is alone...or ignored. And usually at certain times of the day.
I'm no expert, but I have to assume that if he knows the correct time to say hello to someone, then he definitely has it in him to say and learn much more.
I have actually made a point of staying out of the living room (his room) from 11-12am and again at 3-4pm just to hear him practicing his voices. He does me and my daughter very well, but only if we're not watching him.
See if you can catch him practicing, then just leave him be for a bit. Works for my boy.
Charlie also a TAG is 3 1/2 yrs and although he mimics loads of sounds and whistles all the time he he only ever says hello and hiya in my voice really cute but would love to hear him talk more
We try to 'teach' my grey all kinds of stuff.....and he usually ignores that stuff and says or mimics other random things. For example every time I come in the room I say 'Hey Baby', he has never said it. But when I got a new puppy, the puppy got scare once and cried out, now my grey makes that noise at least once a day. They seem to be very selective. You may try several words and phrases, maybe he'll pick the ones he likes.
Birds typicaly associate words with drama and action. You could say hi till your blue in the face and nothing....drop something heavy on your toe and scream ------ your bird is bound to have a new favorite word.
I am owned by 6 rehomed Greys that I have had for 2 weeks to 2 1/2 years. When I adopted Jack who is now called Jade after being DNA sexed I was told she likes and eats everything and talks alot.Well it's was at least 2 years and she hadn't said a word. Finally one day she started talking calling my husband saying "Elliott" or "El". Before than she never said anything and there's a lot of talking going on in our house. The rest of the Greys have talked
since day one of coming to our house.Their ages range from about 5 years to 14 years old.
Rocky Lee 5 years old who was just rehomed to us within the last 2 months talks, whistles and sings all the time.Sometimes too much.We wake up to all this so many times.Sometimes it's amusing and other time annoying.
I am sure this has been said but I will say it again..lol With an African Gray watch the pupils of their eyes when you say a phrase to them. If the pupils get smaller they are paying attention to that phrase and really like it. If their pupils don't get smaller try another phrase. Find one that the pupils get smaller every time you say it and then keep repeating that phrase for awhile. IT does work most of the time. That is what I do with my African gray.. Usually when we find a phrase she likes (her pupils get smaller) we say that phrase quite a few times and she usually picks it up.. Well hope this helps someone. Doesn't hurt to try different things I always say
