hi guys!I am greek so i am doing mistakes of my writing.I am 14 years old and i want to buy a parrot.I already have one white-eyed conure but i want something biger.I am between african grey and amazons. What should i buy?I can offer total 6 hours to the bird and it will have friend my other parrot. What you say?
I am sorry, I don't mean to be rude or to hurt your feelings but, at fourteen, you should not have a parrot. They are very hard to keep healthy and happy and it takes a lot of reading and research to learn how to care for them properly. They are also very expensive to keep. Besides, he will bond to you and, before you know it, you will be grown and doing your own thing and forget all about the poor bird who will still have another forty years of life left. Get yourself a dog, instead.
As Beatriz says they are hard to keep happy & healthy. You are better off with parakeets or cockatiels, they need care also, just not as high maintenance as your bigger parrots such as african greys & amazons. There is no such thing as well I have a date this whole weekend or I'm spending the weekend at my pals house, because they just won't wait for you. You have to be there to take care of them everyday! No matter what. It is a gigantic responsibility to take on a parrot like a african grey or amazon. So good luck & please give a lot of thought into the type of parrot you are looking for!
guys thank you for your advise.I can't have dog beqause i live in apartment.I was serching for informations for african greys 3 years and i decided to buy one.I prefer african than amazon.Do you know if amazons take their feathers out when they are sad?
hi john 7,
1st let me start off with any bird can be a feather picker. It can be due to diet, enviroment, lack of attention, & cruelty.
African greys tend to be a bit pickier & are more prone to feather picking. They also tend to bond to one person, which makes it hard if you would need somebody to step in to take care of him. I have 2 african greys & they both bonded to me. My husband can talk to them but he can not handle them as they try to bite him.
I would recommend a amazon, they are a little hardier & usually will except everybody in the family.
Keep in mind tho, every bird is an individual & they don't necessarily follow the norm for them. Good luck.
Hi John,
From what I read, the yellow crowned amazon might be what you might like. Here is the address, it will take you directly to the page I looked at & then you can see for your self.
Amazons can be as needy as an African Gray and Amazon males are holy terrors once they reach the age of sexual frustration, so much so that some rescues don't even take them and demand a DNA of any Amazon before committing.
A fourteen year old boy cannot possibly care properly for a parrot, please reconsider. An initial vetting costs between $300 and $400 here in America, I don't know how much it costs in Greece but I know it's just as expensive in Spain where my brother lives. Do you have that kind of money?
Also, if you live in an apartment, noise that bothers the neighbors is a big consideration and Amazons are quite vocal and very loud.
