hi all ,i have an african grey he is 4 and a half years old and is verry happy and in good condition ,but over the last coppel of weeks he started to lose some of his flight feathers and they have nearthey all gon away in one of his wings ,and he can not fly ,he is normality a very good flyer can anyone tell why this is ??thx
He lost them as in he's molting or he lost them as in he plucked or barbered them?
Because when parrots molt, it's always done gradually and symmetrically so they lose the same two primaries on each wing at the same time but, if you look closely, you'll see the pin feathers coming out. If, on the other hand, the feathers are just not there or there are only stubs left and it happened to only one wing, he is either plucking or barbering them. It's very rare for parrots to start by plucking or barbering primaries though -this is suicide in the wild. So which one is it? Molt, plucking or barbering?
well he is molting i can see the pinheads on his head and their is new primaries comeing out ,but he lost more on his left wing and when he trys to fly he just hits the floor.....thx for your replay
It seems to me that he is molting, a bit off but molting nonetheless. But, watch him, because he is not supposed to hit the floor just because he lost two primaries on one side sooner than the other although it could happen if he is clipped because then he would have no surface whatsoever there for air resistance.
