Are there any macaw owners

Rockinseattle:
WOW not a lot of macaw owners on here.
Kimba:

Hi and welcome! Good to have more Macaw owners on board! Do you have pics?

Mr Spock:

**********

Rockinseattle:

I was just curious because there were not a lot of post in this section.

I have a Yellow Collared Macaw as well.
Aren't they such cute little stinkers:)

Willis T's Dad:

I've got 2, a Yellow Collared Macaw and a Greenwing.

Kimba:

What's funny is I've never seen so many yellow collareds in one forum before.

macawmama:

2 greenwings, 2 blue & Golds, Scarlet, had YC years ago- talked like scooby doo.

Rockinseattle:

I also have a B&G and a GW..

I love macaws because they are such goofy clowns. My B&G scares me most of the time because she likes to hang by one toe nail on her boing.. I am always affraid that one of these days she is going to fall and go kaplunk.

Its all about the birds:

I have a B&G. He will risk life and limb for a single nut, I actually have to hide the nut container in different spots because when he is out of his cage- he dosen't want to have time with me with any visible nuts around he will steal them. He rolls on his back in to my arms and lays their for a good scratch- he knows I am a sucker for a B&G in my arms He will lay their for about 10 minutes and them of course wants a nut in praises of being an excellent boy.

Rockinseattle:

I love it when macaws roll over. Mine does this and wants her belly scratched, or she likes to roll over and chew on her toys on her back.

Nuts - Both of my large macaws go nuts for nuts.

Sashagirl:

I am owned by 4 Macaws.3 B&G and 1 Harlequin. All females except for Sunshine who is a male. I named Azul and Sunshine before they came to me three years ago.Azul and Sunshine were handfed by me when they were only 5 days to 1 week old.The other 2 are rehomes.I have added 2 more Macaws to my flock on 10/20 It's 2 Hahn's Macaws both 8 years old Echo and Morning Glory.

David:

Hello anyone,
My name is David and I live in a very small town outside of Austin,Texas....no big parrots here..my two "GIRLS" are the only ones around...female B&G and a female MM,both are rehome birds.I have been very lucky with these two and would tell anyone to adopt if you can....just the reading first and be ready to be patient...the results can blow you away.
Thanx for listening,David

breezy:

i have only had my maccaw for 4 four months. he is a year and a half old. he doesn't say alot yet. hello and step up. he makes alot of noise though to get your attention. we are in the middle of makeing a home aide cage 5ft. by 5ft. and 8ft. high. his wings are not clipped so he is constantly flying over for attention! he loves playing with my hair. his fav. snack is grapes and nuts. i tried taking his grapes away because some say they are bad for him but then he starts pulling out feathers after a couple of days so i am a sucker and give in... he is sitting on my arm now gabbering up a storm! he keeps laughing at me. how funny!

Kimba:

I wouldn't worry about the grapes. Some people say grapes are bad because they suck up pesticides, which you are than feeding to your birds. You could go organic, I feed grapes and have never had an issue.

David:

Hello,David here,
I have two female Macaws,an MM and a B&G.The "BLUE MONKEY" and my "GREEN CHICKEN"...what a couple of goof balls.Never ending nonsence!!!!They spend most of the day together, but always sleep in their own cages.
Is there anyone out there who has an MM? I read alot about folks experiances with B&G's but nothing about MM's.
Thanks for listening,
David

Kimba:

I've only raised one MM a while ago. He was great!

Rockinseattle:

Breezy - Even A clipped macaw can still fly to some degree. Macaws are fun, stubborn, and mushy sometimes.

David - I have not had much experience with a MM before. I have read and heard they can be a little on the nippy side but that may not always be the case.

Rockinseattle:

Article about macaws and how to see them in the wild.. Man do I want to go see them.
WILD MACAWS

SkippersFriend:

I don't own a macaw, but have 2 B&G friends in their 40's...maybe 50's now... owned by my aunt and uncle. (My avatar is a pic of Boom-Boom, a male)
I am currently searching for a macaw as a lifetime companion, as it's so lonely here all day every day. I grew up loving my aunt and uncle's birds (macaws, cockatoos, quakers, amazons). Though I adore the cockatoos just as much, I think the macaw would be a better match for me. I never had the time or perfect home for a parrot until the last couple years, and only now feel secure enough to take the leap. Wish me luck! :D

Kimba:

Good Luck!

Its all about the birds:

Skippers Friend, what kind of macaw are you thinking about buying. I wanted to buy a green wing, but the breeder was in Wisconsin, and I cant drive to wisconsin w/ my schedule. I went with a Mn breeder so I could pick him up and be back faster. Do you have any parrots/animals right now.

SkippersFriend:

I'd like a B&G, but I love all birds. There is a breeder about 50 miles from me that was highly recommended, but they don't have any available at this time. They do have a Harlequin x B&G (father is the harlequin) I am considering, but is a baby they are not sure they will part with yet. I would prefer to give an older bird a home, but it sure is horribly quiet around here lately, and my aunt and her birds moved up north- I SOOO MISS THEM!
No- I haven't owned any larger birds. I was raised around many, but have only had a good place for them and lots of time for the last few years. Skipper (U. Cockatoo) took to me immediately- We've been friends for many years. I've clipped his wings and filed his nails/beak- he doesn't like it much, but doesn't hold a grudge. I was supposed to bring him to live with me, but he has buddied with Merlin, who stopped plucking when they called their "truce"- (that's another post). Any change in either of their lives would not be good right now. They are such sensitive birds. From what I have experienced with all of her birds over the years, I do beleive a macaw is a good match for me ...

Another thing I have to consider too: It is very possible I will end up with a few birds eventually, if they outlive my aunt (I don't look forward to that- I love my aunt and her birds- but it is just a hard fact of life). Besides the 2 cockatoos, she has 2 B&G macaws, an Amazon, and a Quaker... all of which were rescues, but have been with her for at least 35-40 years. I have plenty of space and time here now, but I would prefer first having one of my own- rather than all of a sudden taking on a bunch.

Sorry- I have a habit of thinking out loud, so my posts can get lengthy... At least you will see how I "tick" that way, huh?

David:

HI Skippersfriend,David here,
I was glad to see that you were willing to take on an older bird, both of my Macaws are rehomes...would'nt change a thing......If you are still thinking "BLUE",I know I've seen a lot of adds for sale and adoptions for B&Gs
of all ages.If you're willing to adopt, you may find it rewarding and easier on your wallet.Someone mentioned a Greenwing...I am looking for a rehome GW now,I know a groomer in Austin who has started looking for me.I want a female who needs a home and a new flock. Thanx for listening.

SkippersFriend:

Hi David :) Is great to meet you!
Color doesn't matter much to me- They are all so gorgeous! I only have "blue" in my mind because Echo and Boom-Boom are B&Gs and such sweet birds... yet both have very different personalities too. I have answered a few ads- Even one in our local paper- Unfortunately, the only replies I have gotten reek of scam :( If I can't see the bird/exchange fees in person, they better trust me to reimburse when the bird arrives... So basically I would have to find one close to me, as I prefer to meet a bird first anyways.
I wish you luck on your search for a GW :)

Kimba:

I agree it is never wise to purchase a bird sight unseen.

David:

Absolutely!!!
I can't for a second think I could take a bird unseen...I know I would'nt take a rehome unseen..I want to know at least a little about a new bird...keep looking until you find what you want, because you know you want to be happy as well as the new bird. The right bird is already out there waitting for you..just around the corner..who knows..good luck!!
David

Its all about the birds:

Oh, How could i forget (must be that school has started again) I had a hahns macaw about a year ago. He as one of the sweetest bird I have ever met. I really like the larger parrots but I have all sizes. Does any one have a noble or hans, any mini macaw or how about a hyacinth macaw-Just thinking out loud.

PeeWee's Mom:

I just got my B&G here in Dallas... I was VERY LUCKY! She is 3 years old and was raised in a loving home! She is the sweetest bird I have ever had!
I also answered many ads for birds that I found both online and in the paper... they were supposed to be local but most of them were scams (send me money and I ship the bird, usually from out of the country), it was so disappointing because the advertisement always sounded like just what I wanted!
I found PeeWee online as a local classified and almost didn't answer it because I was supposed to go and get a OW Amazon that day but it fell through when the old owners wanted the bird back (he had been a rescue form a home where he had eaten nothing but french fries and wild bird seed for years. A local family who knows birds well had bought him to get him out of the situation and as per the contract they signed they called the old owners to tell them they had found a new home with me, they freaked out and came and got him.) My heart was broken, and I think that is why my Hubby let me get PeeWee even though she was a little more than the budget was supposed to allow. As soon as we met her she was "THE ONE" :-)! She is the light of my life now and I am amazed... I NEVER thought I would ever have a Macaw!

deedeecmt:

boy..i learnt something new on here..do any of you that have a yellow collred have a pic. to put on here..i don't think i have ever heard of them..i do alot of reading maybe i have seen them but did not know what they were..thanks for the insight..this is why i love this place..HA..I ONLY HAVE ONE B/GOLD I RAISED FROM 3 WEEKS..YES THEY ARE THE GREATEST..THEY ARE LIKE A 2YR OLD 24-7 WHO NEVER LEAVES HOME..ha..I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO HAVE MORE.opps..sorry about the caps..

BuddyBird:

I rescued a Blue and Gold that was suppose to be a foster situation. It's kind of a long story but to make it short.....I have had Buddy for almost a year and do not want to let him go back to either one of the people that had him before. My problem is I don't really have the room to keep him. Right now he is in my living room with a huge cage. My husband built him a huge perch/tree/jungle gym. When I first took him in I didn't know anything about macaws but soon read as much as I could find. I have also asked for opinions from owners of these magnificant birds. He is now a great bird....happy, healthy and extremely lovable. I have become so attached to him but really do not have the time to spend with him that he deserves. Because I love him so much, I would only give him up to a better home than he has right now. Too bad David doesn't live in Connecticut....Buddy might be perfect for him. Of course, I get all teary just thinking about giving him up but that's what love is all about, isn't it?

lestalas:

hey you have got some beautiful animals there i love darwin how old is he?
i also have a bearded dragon spyro he's just turned 1yr old they are so great to watch.
what bird is tinkerbell? is she a hahns?
would love more pics of darwin
thanks ;)

Rockinseattle:

Thanks:) Darwin is about a year and a half old. I really like bearded dragons they are relatively easy to take of and are just plain COOL IMO.

Tinkerbell is a Yellow Collared Macaw. She was a secondhand bird that was given up because the owners had a baby and said she was too needy. News flash to her previous owners, kids aren't any easier LOL.

The mini macaws can be a tad bit nippy but if a person works with them then they aren't as bad. They have huge personalities just like the biggins.

ljhassell:

We were contacted a couple days ago to adopt Gordon, he was an Entertainment Bird from Fl, Bush Gardens. Was put into a breeding program for Bolivian B&G Macaws, now retired. He is a VERY large Macaw, weighs as much as our Large Greenwing.

Rockinseattle:

Are those pics of Gordon at your house?

ljhassell:

Yes

Its all about the birds:

Lori, how is Gordon doing? I have not been here for like 4 months, so first i have heard of it. I have been sick and school, and family problems have been stressing me out, but things are getting better. happy to see you are back on here:)

ljhassell:

Hi, Sorry to hear, isnt life full of surprises? We had elderly parents move in due to heart problems, so always something going on. Gordon is doing very well adjusting to retired life. Buzzy(turned out to be Buzzetta) is now cagemates with Gordon and they seem to be much more at ease having each other to play and squabble over toys. They live in a 40x48 dome top cage with each their own food and water bottles. I also found out the Female Eclectus we were told was 4 is 11 and was seperated from her mate, hence the reason she plucked, so we are also working on pairing her for companionship, as I cant breed or we would have a 100 birds instead of 11. Hope all straightens up for you, as Im not on here much, too busy.
Gordon is a Bolivian B&G Macaw- so he is the size of a large Greenwing Macaw, and eats like one too:)

silgo:

Hello,
I have two macaws. I live in Oregon. I got my green wing from Washington.

batmanXXL:

For all greeenwing macaw lowers I found here nice green winged macaw pictures and some green winged videos.

papasled:

B&G owns my wife and me....

:D

bizzymum:

I have 3. A B&G, Catalina and a severe. I would love another LARGE macaw, but I would have to sleep in the cage with him so that I would have room for him in my house. :D

papayamama:

I have a 2 month old b&g(Papaya). Gotta love the baby stage!

Pirate Ed Lowe:

New Blue & Gold owner here in SC. Brought home a 9 week old and we are hand feeding it now. It has learned to step up in two days. How to escape from its plastic container using one a toy ball as a step ladder today. Waiting on cage delivery. It is eating well and getting more vocal each day.
I say IT as we have yet to get a sex test yet. First Dr. visit for check up next week. We love our new family addition! I do Pirate shows and living history events so the bird will get to travel and meet people with us when it is old enough.

Any tips for a new owner will be greatly appreciated.
